Meet Fran (pictured above in the centre), Kyra’s finance lead who joined the team last year! In this blog, we’ll dive into Fran’s background, her crucial role at Kyra, and why she’s so passionate about working here.
A Natural Fit with Kyra’s Mission
Before joining in May 2023, Fran already knew about the incredible work happening at Kyra. As a York resident, Fran already knew women who had received support from Kyra, and when she spoke about her new job, people were quick to praise the charity’s positive impact.
Her previous role at Two Ridings Community Foundation, which helped fund Kyra’s projects, gave her a deeper understanding of the charity’s work. Combined with her background in psychology, her passion for helping others makes her a natural fit for Kyra’s mission. Now, working from the inside, she fully understands why Kyra is so well-loved.
Managing Kyra’s Finances with Purpose
Fran is in charge of Kyra’s day-to-day finances, carefully tracking costs and making sure every pound is spent wisely. Unlike some financial managers, Fran’s focus isn’t on making money, but instead on maximising resources to support as many women as possible — that’s our version of profit.
In the charity world, finance managers like Fran are the backbone, ensuring sustainability and impact. Fran’s role is all about balancing cost efficiency with delivering real, meaningful support to Kyra’s members, helping Kyra stay true to our mission while reaching as many women as possible.
The Excitement Beyond the Spreadsheets
Working in finance for a charity comes with its challenges. Fran constantly navigates the unpredictability of income, planning for different funding scenarios while ensuring Kyra’s mission stays on track. Balancing restricted funds, which are earmarked for specific projects like the Rose Project or Route to Recovery, adds another layer of complexity.
Yet, Fran thrives in this dynamic role. Beyond the spreadsheets, she’s had many memorable experiences – like rowing in the recent Dragon Boat Race.
“I feel really lucky to have a finance role in the charity sector. The people here truly care, and it’s a beautiful organisation I’m proud to be part of.”
Working on New Projects for Kyra’s Future
Fran is actively involved in developing new projects at Kyra, collaborating with members, staff, and volunteers to secure funding and bring their ideas to life.
What Fran appreciates most is Kyra’s responsive approach — instead of dictating what members should do, Kyra listens to their needs and responds to genuine concerns, shaping programs that make a meaningful impact on the women we support.
For Fran, Kyra is a truly special place to work because of the genuine care and commitment shown to the women it supports. And you can help too — through donations, volunteering, or spreading the word!
