If there’s one skill charity workers need to master, it’s knowing how to write a funding bid.”

Bid writing is crucial for any charity, and without it, vital programs wouldn’t be able to continue. At Kyra, Eimear Bush plays a key role as our Sustainability Worker and Bid Writer, helping secure the funding that keeps us going and allows us to support women in need.

What is Bid Writing?

Bid writing is often confused with grant writing, but they’re not quite the same. While grant writing focuses on applying for available funds, bid writing is about crafting compelling proposals to win specific projects or funding opportunities.

It’s a careful balance of art and strategy, combining hard data and evidence with persuasive, emotive language to convince funders.

Eimear excels at this, seamlessly weaving facts with stories to create proposals that connect with funders on a deeper level, ensuring Kyra’s programs get the support they need.

How Eimear Started at Kyra

Eimear moved to York in 2014, not knowing many people in her new city. After spotting a poster for Kyra and hearing glowing recommendations from the locals, she decided to get involved. Eimear first got involved by volunteering to lead Kyra’s singing group, which helped her meet new people and find a sense of community.

Her journey into bid writing at Kyra began when Yvonne Copley, the charity’s founder, casually asked Eimear about her career. As soon as Yvonne discovered Eimear’s bid writing skills, she knew Kyra could use her talents. Eimear got to work on the charity’s first bids, launching her vital role.

Eimear’s Favorite Memories from Kyra’s Beginnings

Eimear has been with Kyra since its early days, so she has plenty of cherished memories from her time here. One that stands out is when Kyra received its first successful bid, which funded an intergenerational women’s care project. This program paired new mothers with older women for support, conversations, and baking— a big hit that helped build strong, supportive connections.

Another key memory for Eimear was helping Kyra move from its original location in Marygate to the current space at St Saviourgate. Eimear remembers gathering odd bits of furniture and watching the new space evolve into the cozy, welcoming environment Kyra is today.

Why Bid Writing?

Eimear’s love for bid writing comes from hearing the powerful stories of Kyra’s members. Each proposal she writes is fueled by the real-life testimonials of women who have found confidence, new jobs, and empowerment through Kyra’s programs. These stories inspire Eimear to keep securing the funds that make these transformations possible.

Outside of Kyra, Eimear’s talent for writing has been recognised in a big way. In 2022, she won the New Writers Award, showcasing her incredible skills. You can explore her writing here.
