As winter sets in—a time often associated with warmth and connection—it can also exacerbate feelings of loneliness for many young women. In York, young women facing mental health challenges often find themselves waiting for help they desperately need.
Did you know that 75% of women aged 18–25 experiencing mental health struggles are placed on long waiting lists or left unable to access any treatment at all?
That’s why Kyra Women’s Project’s ROSE group is vital. ROSE provides a preventative service for young women, offering connection, support, and empowerment before their well-being worsens.
This winter, we’re launching our Roses in the Snow appeal to ensure these life-changing services can continue.
The Need for Rose
Mental health statistics reveal a stark reality:
- Young women aged 17–25 are twice as likely as young men to experience mental health challenges
- 50% report feeling isolated during the winter months
- 2/3 of young people seeking mental health support face stigma and discrimination, with young women disproportionately affected
ROSE members often face barriers to accessing statutory health services. Many share experiences of long waiting lists, feeling dismissed, or struggling to access neurodiversity resources. These challenges make community-led initiatives like ROSE crucial.
The Impact of Rose
This year, ROSE supported 42 members aged 18–25 through 98 sessions (afternoon and evening), alongside tailored neurodiverse workshops and a fortnightly neurodiverse lunch group. Kyra has also delivered 100 counselling sessions and 33 ‘listening ear’ sessions.
Members consistently share how ROSE has made a difference:
- “I’ve had counselling at Kyra while still on the NHS waiting list.”
- “The mental health team said I’m a healthy weight, so there’s no help.”
- “I’m waiting for an autism assessment—it’s overwhelming, and I don’t know where to turn.”
Since accessing ROSE, 13 members have stopped using statutory mental health services, showing the power of community-led support.
How You Can Help
Kyra aims to fund more counselling and coaching sessions. Each 50-minute counselling session costs £50. Your donation could help us:
- £50 covers one counselling session or mindfulness session.
- £10 provides resources for a Rose+ session.
Your support could also contribute to key costs like rent and utilities, ensuring our doors stay open for all.
Together, we can make a difference. Donate today to help young women in York thrive this winter.
