Our Courses

Whatever your reason for seeking help, we recognise that women face challenges in their lives that are distinct from those of men. At Kyra you can access a wide range of activities, training, counselling, information and support to suit different needs – most courses are free of charge for our members. We offer a safe, welcoming and supportive environment to help you make the changes you need, at your own pace.

Our activities include:

  • courses to address specific issues e.g. the Freedom Programme and MODA programme, both focussing on recovery from domestic abuse, the Loss group, counselling and coaching, and our specific self-esteem and anxiety courses; as well as money advice and legal advice provided by expert partners
  • activities that develop skills such as managing information and communication technology (ICT), meditation, job readiness and mindfulness
  • activities that help women express and explore feelings: singing, poetry, drama and creative writing
  • sessions that aim to reduce isolation and build confidence – informal drop-in sessions (currently booked to manage numbers), gardening, crafting, the Young Women’s ROSE Group and the walking group.

You will need to be a member of Kyra to access these activities. If you haven’t already joined us, you can book an enrolment appointment on the Home page.

Joining a course

Most courses at Kyra Women’s Project are free. If you feel you can give a donation, it would help keep these and future courses free.

It is important to book a place as spaces are limited. Whether it’s building your self-esteem, managing stress or improving your skills for work, there are many courses to choose from each month. See our monthly newsletter for more details and a monthly timetable.

Building Self-esteem

A healthy self-esteem is an important part of our well-being. We offer the ESTA Programme, which has two main objectives: to encourage a better understanding of our self-esteem and self-efficacy; and to teach practical skills and techniques which enable changes in thinking and behaviour to improve self-esteem. These strategies help encourage change in behaviour and thoughts that are linked to low self-esteem. Contact bookings@kyra.org.uk to book a place

The ROSE project

Our ROSE project is for young women aged 18 – 25. Amongst crafts and other activities, the group has discussed personal safety, wellbeing, mental health, body image and self-confidence. Members have said: “It gave me a space to be slightly weird and cackly while also discussing really important things. The fact that I didn’t need to hide my mental health issues made me feel so much more comfortable.” And: “Going to the ROSE project was the first time I was able to leave the house and go into York town centre without having a panic attack in a long time. I learnt about self-esteem in a way that I hadn’t understood before.” For more information, email sherrie@kyra.org.uk

Drop-ins

Everyone is welcome at our weekly drop-in sessions where you can share a cup of tea and a chat with other members and our volunteers. Some members use the session to do some crafting – or you can just sit and enjoy the company.

We are currently meeting women face to face, under Covid secure conditions, with limited numbers attending each session. We are running these sessions on Tuesday afternoons and Thursday mornings and at the moment we ask members to book to attend. Please email bookings@kyra.org.uk to book a place.

Social Activities

Our social activities are a fun, relaxed way of engaging in a shared interest, which nurtures your self-confidence and social interactions. We hold regular activities to suit many different interests: poetry, art, crafts, cookery. Whether you want to manage stress, need a form of escape, meet with others, challenge yourself or just enjoy a shared moment, you’re welcome to join one of our free regular social activities. See the events calendar or view the monthly newsletter for details.
